Ähnlichkeit (Similarity)

Installation: Kunsthalle Lingen, Germany
October 2017–January 2018

This installation was composed of a series of shelf-works and a floor-piece. The shelves held ink drawings, interspersed with found and handmade objects. The particular arrangements evolved slowly, like how one casually assembles collectibles at home. It is a non-hierarchical structure that foregrounds the coexistence of things: each fragment plays an important role in the overall ensemble. I was interested in the interstices between what is abstract, figurative, or perceived experientially, on the level of the senses. Many of the objects are fragile or ephemeral (wasp's nest, drawings on bean pods), and continued to dry up or decay over the course of the exhibition. I thought of the floor-piece as the “kitchen,” where various materials were laid out as they awaited the next stage of transformation. A key element was a series of bundles. Sewn from towels, blankets, and socks, they refer to taking care of one’s body (to bathe, rest, sleep, warm, cover, cure), yet also resemble fictional bodily organs.
