For the first few months I worked in solitude, making large, abstract oil paintings in an improvisatory way. My impulse was to gradually expand beyond the edges of the canvas, to inhabit the residual infrastructure of this corner cafe. I was interested in exploring the slippage between production and presentation, the precious and disposable, the sensuous and unpalatable. Over time I experimented with painting on myriad surfaces, such as china plates, plastic food containers, and buckets discarded from nearby restaurants. The built-in shelves were used to display my "takeout paintings." The installation was then opened to the public and included a series of performances.
