Book Launch

Boréal Borscht or The Malina Miniature
Friday, July 18, 2008, 7pm.

Book title pageI spend all day making books, each one the size of a crumb.
There is immense satisfaction in seeing them piled on a shelf.
All these little objects are like inhaling – even holding one’s breath.

This artist’s book was made following my residency at Boréal Art/Nature in 2006-2007. Part archive, part storybook, part wandering/wondering, this work interweaves drawings, written reflections, and photographs of Malinas, the performance-installation I presented in the Boréal cabin in the spring of 2007. Intimate in scale, the book foregrounds the miniature, the detail, while encompassing larger themes such as war and escape. During my time on the Boréal land, I often had the sense that the forest, the cabin, could be in another country, another time, and it was this displacement/bridging that was my point of departure.

Although I have made books before, this is my first multiple (printed in an edition of 500) and I am very excited to share it. For those of you who already have the book, I hope you will still come say hello! And please spread the word.

When: Friday, July 18, 2008, 7pm.

The Seed of a Gesture

A drawing workshop for artists
January 28-March 17, 2008

drawing workshopThis winter I am offering a drawing workshop specifically for a small group of artists from all disciplines (visual arts, film, theatre, dance, music, writing…). Through my own experience I have found it to be very liberating and generative to explore forms that are less familiar to me, transposing ideas from one medium to another. This is an opportunity to develop a body of work in an open, process-based studio context.

The Paper Ladder

September 19, 2007

paper ladderYou are invited to The Paper Ladder, a mixed-media installation in a former store. Here you will encounter a world of hidden collections, waiting to be discovered through hands-on interaction.
reach in… unwrap… pass along… exchange…
store away… peek through… search for…
Playing off of relations between reality and fantasy, past and present, this exhibition draws participants into “papertime,” where clocks do not necessarily move forward. Throughout the month, the piece will change in response to the public’s involvement. The Paper Ladder was created especially for children, however everyone is welcome! Please call in advance to arrange a group visit: (514) 271-4691.

When: October 4-27, 2007
Opening: Thursday, Oct. 4, 5- pm
Hours: Wed-Fri, 10-5; Sat-Sun, 12-4

Where: 653 Ogilvy Ave., Montreal (Parc Metro, Bus #80).
