A Very Slow Blue

Durational performance in a former church, Île de Tatihou, France, as part of Le Chant des pistes sauvages
August 12, 2018 (3 hours)

This performance centred around a collection of blue things. I began by arranging them according to their particular tones. In reference to the islandfs history of quarantining people with the plague, I used blueberry juice to paint the words NET (clean) and SALE (dirty), and then hung each paper on the doors. The piece moved between different registers: animating objects like a puppeteer, or fashioning impromptu costumes. At times I would go outside, for example when I ran with a group of participants (dressed in blue), or attempted to climb the fort wall and look out over the sea, as if I were a prisoner escaping. Responding to the special acoustic I worked with my voice, as well as played with the resonance of plastic water bottles. The overall sense was a dreamlike space where the sacred, everyday, and absurd intersected.
