TO MAKE ENDS MEET

Performance-installation in century-old house, Tilting
Fogo Island, Newfoundland October 2013 (7 hours)

Each room had a different focus and as a whole formed a cycle (the continuous drawing room, the red ochre room, the brush room, the room for clearing out poison, the root cellar...). Some of the themes included: relations between economics and nature, the presence/absence of former residents, as well as the foregrounding of Beothuk (First Nations) history through painting all my archived objects with red ochre. Viewers could wander through the rooms to follow the actions. Most of the materials were found locally, for example I collected brushes washed up on shore, and also made my own, using found wood, pine resin, and grasses. An integral part of this project was working with filmmaker Tim Wilson to capture scenes for the camera, for example a vignette in which neighbour Louise Broders fed sheep in the kitchen. Some of the photos were incorporated into the installation.
